Summary

Looking for the ultimate route to explore Brisbane? Look no further than the Mountain to Bays Loop! Why? Because it’s a ride that truly has it all—mountains, national parks, rivers, baysides, and the city.

But be warned, this route isn’t a walk in the park. It’s challenging, but trust us, it’s worth every pedal stroke.

The Clear Mountain to Bays Loop is designed to showcase the best of Brisbane in one epic ride.

Start your adventure in the city, heading towards Bunya National Park via Kelvin Grove. This section offers a bit of rolling terrain and a short but steep gradient to get you warmed up.

Turn left onto Jinker Track, one of the highlights of the ride. As you make your way towards Bunya Conservation Park, you’ll leave the city behind and immerse yourself in lush greenery and undulating roads. The mountain ranges start to come into view, setting the stage for what’s to come.

Next up: Clear Mountain, where things really heat up. This segment demands your climbing legs! It starts off manageable but soon ramps up to double-digit gradients, peaking at a grueling 18% in places.

As you climb, you’ll be rewarded with an incredible 180-degree view of Lake Samsonvale from the top of the hill. Take a moment to soak it all in; once you start your descent, you might not want to face that climb again anytime soon!

From the mountain, head towards the lake—the very one you admired from above. This stretch features beautiful, winding roads with minimal traffic.

At the lake, you can either refill your water bottle at the fountain or continue towards the bay for a café stop around the 78km mark.

The ride to the bay is a blast, featuring the Moreton Bay Cycle Way—a 14km bikeway mixed with a bit of open road.

The final stretch takes you through the bayside areas of Scarborough, Redcliffe, Shorncliffe, and Sandgate. Here, you’ll find plenty of places to grab a drink or use the restroom.

Tips for a great ride:

  • Plan your nutrition carefully; water stops are sparse in the first half of the route.
  • Prepare for the worst—windy conditions around the bayside can make things tougher, so check the forecast before you set out.
  • Be extra cautious on the descent from Clear Mountain; it’s steep and requires careful handling.
  • If needed, there’s a train option for a Plan B back to the city at Petrie or Deagon.

Overall, this is our favorite route for showing off Brisbane to visitors. It’s a challenging ride with breathtaking views of mountains, lakes, parks, and bays—all in one fantastic journey. Happy cycling!
