Summary
“This is what dream gravel ride are made of. “
It was one of the best gravel ride we have done so far. Why? we can give you so many reasons why.
A gravel route created based on lots of online research around the area. There are about 4 Down Burnett series, here is the first one. Starting from a rural beautiful town called Crows Nest (about 2 hours drive from Brisbane City).
Heading north and within 2 km you will right away be riding on the gravel. Slightly undulating with smooth gravel surface bit sandy but not slippery. As we started riding at 6am, we were welcomed by a beautiful sunrise and an amazing view of the mountains.

Our route took us north towards Goombungee, navigating through a variety of gravel surfaces. Expect to encounter around 3-4 different types of gravel: from white and sandy, to red and muddy, to brown and loose, and finally, smooth brown gravel roads.
Despite its allure, this route proved surprisingly challenging (check out the elevation map to see why). It felt like a constant uphill battle every time we started a new gravel segment.
But the views kept our spirits high. The roads were quiet with little to no traffic, making it feel like we had the place to ourselves.
Upon reaching Goombungee, we stopped at a cozy café for a quick refuel before heading back to Crows Nest via Plainby and Pechey.
As the day heated up, we definitely felt the rise in temperature and the increasing difficulty of the hills. The second half of the ride was tougher, with steeper climbs and more technical descents.
If you need another stop, Hampton (around the 93 km mark) is a great option with a café and service station for a water refill.
Otherwise, push through to Crows Nest for the best sausage rolls you’ll ever taste at Lily Artisan Bakery.
Overall, if you’re looking for an unforgettable gravel day trip outside Brisbane, add this to your list—you won’t regret it!
Tip: Avoid summer if you can, as the heat can be intense.
