Summary
As part of the Boundless Gravel Brisbane campaign, we’re on the lookout for an exhilarating gravel fondo ride near Brisbane city—ideally within an hour’s drive. After some in-depth research, we discovered an incredible route centered around Glass House Mountain.
The adventure begins in Woodford and heads north towards the stunning Glass House Mountain lookout. Initially, you’ll enjoy a smooth, tarmac road that offers a tranquil, countryside vibe. At the 10km mark, the real fun starts as you hit the gravel section.
This gravel road is a treat, shaded by towering trees with a pleasantly smooth surface. It’s gently undulating in places but nothing overly challenging or technical.

Your first stop should be the Glass House Mountain Cafe. If you’re an early bird, make sure to check their opening hours before you head out. Before reaching the cafe, take a moment to enjoy the breathtaking lookout point.
As you continue, the gravel becomes a bit more technical, with larger loose rocks and a rougher surface. Don’t rush through this section; take your time to savor the increasingly spectacular views.
The adventure intensifies when you find yourself lifting your bike over a gate to continue on the gravel road. The stunning scenery will leave you in awe.
As you pass Beerburrum and cross the Bruce Highway, the landscape transforms. You’ll encounter taller grass and a single track winding alongside tall pine trees. This section is flatter compared to the earlier parts, featuring long, straight gravel roads that invite you to pick up the pace.
We opted to refuel at the Caboolture Shopping Center after 63km. It’s a good idea to stock up here, as options become scarce later on, and the terrain gets a bit more challenging.
Continuing on to Beerburrum West State Forest, you’ll notice an increase in traffic with trail motorbikes and their enthusiasts. This area is popular with motorcyclists, so be prepared for more activity on the road.
The final stretch of the ride is more undulating, with a couple of notable climbs—one reaching a steep 13% gradient for a short duration. Instead of retracing your steps, we took a scenic detour through some additional gravel sections you won’t want to miss.
Overall, this route offers an incredible gravel adventure. However, proper planning is essential to fully enjoy the experience.
Tips:
- Avoid this route during the wet season to steer clear of muddy conditions.
- Start early in the morning to dodge the heavy traffic of trail motorbikes.
- Plan your refueling stops carefully, as options are limited once you’re deep into the gravel sections.
