If Mt. Coot-tha is the crown jewel for city climbers, then Mt. Gravatt is the hidden gem for those on the south side. This charming hill is your perfect spot for a weekly elevation boost.
While it might not offer the epic challenge you’re seeking, Mt. Gravatt is an excellent starting point for beginners. Why? It’s less technical, features a smooth, gradual ascent without any brutal double-digit gradients, and sees fewer cyclists compared to Mt. Coot-tha. Plus, the breathtaking lookout at the summit offers stunning views of Brisbane city.
The route kicks off in Brisbane city and heads towards Mt. Gravatt via the Veloway. You’ll enjoy a stretch of open road, and if you set out early in the morning, you’ll avoid the worst of the traffic (just steer clear of peak hours).
The climb itself spans about 2 kilometers, with a maximum gradient of 9% at the start. The rest of the climb maintains a more manageable gradient of 4-7%, with a few sections hitting 8%. This makes Mt. Gravatt ideal for hill repeat training, offering just the right mix of challenge and reward.
