Summary

Ready to take your climbing to the next level after Mt.Coot-tha? Mt. Nebo offers an exhilarating challenge with its longer climbs and rewarding recoveries. This route is a climber’s paradise, featuring a gradual 16km ascent from the base all the way to Jolly’s Lookout.

Start in the city and head toward Waterworks Road. This stretch will warm up your legs with rolling hills before you tackle the Mt. Nebo segment. It’s a great way to ease into the climb.

Don’t worry about the 16km climb being relentless. It’s not a constant grind. You’ll get breaks with downhill sections scattered throughout, with climbs ranging from 300 meters to 2 kilometers.

Tip: If climbing isn’t your forte but you’re eager to challenge yourself, pace yourself and play the long game.

Why is Mt. Nebo a climber’s dream? At the right time—ideally outside peak hours—you’ll find it wonderfully quiet. The long, winding roads shaded by trees create the perfect environment for climbers.

Make sure to follow the route all the way to Jolly’s Lookout. The view is absolutely worth it! We’ve also included a detour to a nearby café where you can refuel before heading back to the city.

Returning to the city isn’t just a straightforward descent. Thanks to the rolling profile of the climb, the descent will mirror the climb—so expect some rolling terrain along the way.

Overall, if you’re a climber or just looking for a route with a solid elevation profile, Mt. Nebo is definitely worth considering. Happy climbing!
