Estimated Moving Time: 7-8 hours
Summary
Get ready for one of the most breathtaking rides we’ve ever experienced! This epic journey is challenging from start to finish, offering incredible scenery and unforgettable climbs.
Your Adventure Begins:
Location: Start your ride in Rathdowney, roughly a 1.5-hour drive from Brisbane city. Enjoy the picturesque drive around the Scenic Rim.
Parking: We parked at the Rathdowney Playground and began our ride from there. Despite starting a bit late at 7 am on a weekend, we were pleasantly surprised by the lack of traffic.

The Ride:
1. Boonah-Rathdowney Road: The first segment features a scenic, winding road with a single 1 km climb at a steep 7%. Enjoy stunning views of Mt. Maroon on your left as you ride along this tranquil road.
2. Southern Downs: This is the heart of the route. Turn left onto Head Road and brace yourself for the sign: “Steep, winding, narrow climb for the next 8 km.” This 21.22 km climb averages a 3.8% gradient, but be prepared for steep sections, including a 800 m stretch at 17%, a 3.7 km segment averaging 10.9%, and a 1.6 km stretch at 15%. The climb is divided into two main parts: the longer, more gradual 10 km climb followed by rolling hills before tackling the shorter, steeper second climb.
Highlight: At Southern Downs, the view opens up to reveal the stunning ranges and mountains. Despite the steep grades, the climb is shaded and spectacular.
3. Queens Mary Falls to Woodenbong: After the climb, enjoy some thrilling descents—arguably some of the most beautiful we’ve done, despite the strong crosswinds. The views are breathtaking, and while the road surface isn’t perfect, it’s generally smooth.
Stop: Mid-descent, make sure to stop at Queens Mary Falls to refuel, as water stops are scarce.
4. Woodenbong Leg: The ride from Queens Mary Falls to Woodenbong is relatively easier compared to the earlier climbs. Expect rolling terrain, short climbs, and winding roads.
Favorite Stretch: Between Legume and Woodenbong, the road is unexpectedly smooth and wide. Though there are a few other vehicles, the views of the Scenic Rim are captivating at every turn.
5. Return to Rathdowney: The final stretch from Woodenbong back to Rathdowney features a 3 km climb with a gradient under 7%, followed by rolling terrain and descents all the way back.
Overall: This ride stands out as one of the most scenic we’ve tackled. Surrounded by the breathtaking beauty of the Scenic Rim from start to finish, and with quiet roads that add to the charm, it’s a must-do for any cyclist visiting Queensland or seeking an epic adventure. Add this to your bucket list—you won’t regret it!
