Ride Overview: Scenic, Social & Surprisingly Adventurous
Our adventure began at Tom Volp Park in Meringandan, a small township north of Toowoomba. From the start, we were greeted by rolling tarmac that quickly transitioned into gravel—within just the first kilometre.
Segment 1: Meringandan to Goombungee
The initial stretch to Goombungee featured undulating gravel roads with gradients peaking at around 10%. While not overly technical, the constant rollers made for a good warm-up. The thick morning fog added an almost mystical vibe to the ride, creating a calm and quiet start.
At Goombungee, the first water stop provided a chance to refuel and catch up with fellow riders. From here, the terrain flattened significantly, with long open stretches offering panoramic views of the Toowoomba region.
Segment 2: Goombungee to Oakey
With the fog lifting, riders were rewarded with stunning rural scenery. Wide open fields, distant mountain ranges, and the sight of the Oakey Army Aviation Centre made this part of the ride truly memorable.
Segment 3: Kingsthorpe to Meringandan – Mud, Fun, and Creek Crossings
The final leg brought the most adventure. Recent rains had turned sections of the route into thick, boggy trails. Mud-caked wheels, water-filled tracks, and even knee-deep sections forced some riders to dismount and hike-a-bike. It was tough, messy—but incredibly fun.
Just when our bikes needed it most, we came to a creek crossing, the perfect place to rinse off the mud before the final stretch back to Meringandan.
